Kids are odd creatures. They wake up early on weekends but it’s close to impossible to get them up during the week for school. They can’t memorize school work but they know the lyrics to every song from their favorite band. They think tomatoes are disgusting but love ketchup. And the strangest thing…they HATE to brush their teeth.
It’s not that it’s that hard to do…it’s just that they can’t seem to be bothered with it. After all…they are busy! There’s TV to watch and video games to play.. As parents we try everything to get our kids to like brushing. We will buy the more expensive toothbrushes with the kids favorite characters on it. We’ll buy the flavored toothpaste that is supposed to appeal to kids. “Bubble gum minty fun” That stuff is nasty. Apparently toothpaste companies don’t know what bubble gum OR fun tastes like. None of these little tricks stop the daily brush battle.
A team of dads in the San Francisco area have come up with a very clever idea that just might fix this problem for good. Dr. Yong-Jing Wang and Ethan Daniel Schur developed Grush, a toothbrush that connects to a mobile device. Why is this so monumental you ask?? The app loaded on the mobile device will make this whole tooth brushing thing actually fun for kids. As they brush they can watch monsters pop out from behind their teeth and zap them! There is even a toothy orchestra game that will allow you to make music by brushing your teeth. There will be different games on the app but they all aim at one idea…making brushing fun for kids so they actually do it.
Grush will also send the brushing information to an app on the parents mobile device so they can see who’s brushed and not have to do the silly “come here, let me smell your breath” game every day. The child’s brushing information can also be stored in the cloud and can be accessed by their dentist. Simple ideas but so very smart!
Grush is still in the development stage but you can pre-order and support their Indiegogo campaign here. I’m thinking I need some of these for my kids and I should probably get one for me as well because it is important to keep up with what my kids are doing and….ok, who am I kidding? I wanna zap monsters while I brush!! Pew! Pew! Pew!!
