The Walking Dead: Michonne – Episode 3: “What We Deserve” Review

Over the past couple months we’ve reviewed Episode 1 and Episode 2 of The Walking Dead: Michonne from Telltale Games. The relatively short series has come to an end, and with that our The Walking Dead: Michonne – Episode 3: “What We Deserve” review takes a look at the end of what was largely an empathetic journey.

As with our Episode 2 review, this one will focus mostly on the story as gameplay, sound, and graphics are mainly consistent throughout the series.

Story

The story obviously picks up where Episode 2 concluded and right away we’re whisked back a couple of weeks to the boat where we get a bit more history on one of the other characters, Oak. Fast forward to the present and things are going south as Norma makes contact again before she arrives to trade for her brother Randall. Of course, as Michonne you basically decide what the group is going to do with Randall, and when the time comes Norma as well.

As with the previous episodes, Michonne ends up flashing back between events in the present and the past, in which she is still trying to figure out what happened to her two daughters. The others in her current situation more or less look up to her as a leader, and await her signal before doing anything. But, as with most Walking Dead episodes, things usually go south in a hurry and “What We Deserve” is no different. One thing leads to another, and once again Michonne is in the predicament of trying to save children from death. Unfortunately at this point the series starts to feel a little too scripted, and it’s not hard to see where the story is going and how it’s going to end up. While we do eventually find out what happened to Michonne’s daughters, in the end it’s pretty much about redemption, and whether or not you choose to let Michonne succumb to the past or stay strong for those around her in the present.

While I appreciated the overall story and felt for Michonne being a parent and all, there wasn’t anything in the series that was really shocking or unexpected. And while at some parts you may have felt empathetic towards Michonne, by the end of the story I couldn’t help noticing that I didn’t really care all that much — and I think that was in part to how short and rushed the story felt at times.

Gameplay

Again, a quick note on the gameplay here. In the previous episode, there were a few more spots where the game stuttered. In this episode, I didn’t notice it as much — if at all. As far as length goes, this was still a really short episode and took about an hour to play which makes the entire three episode series about 3 hours in length.

Wrap-up

If you’re a huge fan of The Walking Dead, you’ll want to play through this series from Telltale Games. It’s short, but gives you a good glimpse into where Michonne came from and what made her how she is in the series. There are worse ways to spend $15, and for the price of a couple cups of coffees or less than a movie, you’ll have at least a few hours of enjoyment delving into the backstory of one of everyone’s favourite The Walking Dead characters.
