Spider-Man is still two halves of the same person in The Amazing Spider-Man #4 but Peter is starting to miss being the whole person he was before the separation. He watches on TV as Spider-Man saves the day and makes a name for himself but he can’t help but be a bit annoyed at the fact that Spidey is doing a lot of damage and not being very responsible.
People are getting hurt and there is mass property destruction while Spider-Man’s reply to it all is something like “That’s what Damage Control (they clean up after Super Hero fights) is for. Wouldn’t want to put them out of a job.” Without Peter’s learned mantra of “With great power, must come great responsibility,” this version of Spider-Man is getting reckless.
The news keeps getting worse too. When Peter learns that the experiment which separated him from being Spider-Man has some major side effects, leading to eventual death, he’s left trying to figure out how to fix this colossal mistake that appeared to be a good thing at first, but now, not so much.
I’m still loving the fun and adventurous story by Nick Spencer, with the vibrant colors of Laura Martin, over the wonderful art of Ryan Ottley and inks by Cliff Rathburn. Right now this is my favorite book being released. So many books today have gone super serious and dark. Sometimes it’s needed, like with the Venom series, but with Spider-Man, I think this feels like a return to the original fun that Stan Lee set out to put forth with this character.
On a side note: I can’t be the only one wondering what is under Spidey’s mask if Peter has his own face??? I do wonder if we will ever find out?
Wrap Up
I can’t think of a single reason why you shouldn’t be picking up this book right now. It’s fresh, it’s vibrant, and most of all, it’s fun!
